FAQ – Frequently asked questions about the museum, Live On Stage, and our children’s concerts.

 

MUSEUM/GENERAL

 

What are the opening hours?
Daily from 10:00 a.m.-10:00 p.m. (also on weekends and bank holidays, last admission: 9:30 p.m.).

What it Haus der Musik? What is there to see?
Haus der Musik is an interactive sound museum on four floors. On the first floor, you will find the museum of the Vienna Philharmonics. The second level is dedicated to sound phenomena — here, you can experiment with different sounds. On the third floor „The Great Composers“, you will learn all about the most famous composers that worked and lived in Vienna (Mozart, Beethoven, Schubert,…). On the fourth floor you can conduct the Vienna Philharmonic Orchestra with the Virtual Conductor and buy musical gifts and souvenirs in the HdM-museum shop.

Can I bring my backpack, jacket or luggage into the exhibition?
No, backpacks, jackets, big bags or carryons must be left at the cloakroom. You may bring your handbag or other small bags into the museum if you like. The cloakroom is located at the cash desk where a member of our staff will take care of your belongings for free. There are no self-service lockers at the museum.

What do I have to consider when visiting with a baby or toddler (strollers/pushchairs etc.)?
You may bring a stroller into the museum. All floors are accessible vie the elevator. You may also deposit your stroller at the cloakroom. There is a wheelchair accessible changing table on the ground floor (please ask a member of staff) or at the restrooms in the basement.
Eating and drinking is not permitted in the museum, but you can take a break in the glass-roofed courtyard any time and continue your visit afterwards. Please keep your ticket at hand upon reentering the museum.

How can I reach Haus der Musik with public transport?
The closest stations are Karlsplatz/Oper (U1,U2, U4, 1,2,D, 71) or Stephansplatz (U1,U3) as well as Schwrzenbergplatz (2, D, 71).

Are there guided tours?

Is there a recommended age for the exhibition?
The minimum age we recommend for children is 5 years old, in order for them to be able to properly operate all terminals. Of course it is also possible to visit the museum with younger children, with a focus on the right installations and rooms.

Can I book or reserve tickets in advance?
You can purchase the full-price ticket in advance via www.wien-ticket.at All other tickets (discounts, groups, families etc.) can only be directly purchased at the museum’s box office.

Is Haus der Musik wheelchair accessible?
Yes, the entire house is wheelchair accessible. Toilets for people with disabilities are located on the ground floor. Please notify the staff at the cash desk if you need to use them.

I would like to visit HdM with a school class or group—what do I have to do?
Please sign up in advance and as soon as possible, so that we can coordinate your visit and avoid overcrowding in the museum. We want you and your group/class to enjoy your visit as much as possible. Please understand that we will give priority to signed up groups. You can sign up via phone under 0043 1513 4850 or email at info@hdm.at.

Can I pay a group visit in advance?
No, unfortunately not.

Can I leave the museum and return later?
Yes, if you return on the same day. In this case, please inform our staff.

Will my inquiries be taken care of on weekends and holidays?
The museum can be contacted by phone daily from 10am – 10pm. Email inquiries will be processed on weekdays. 

Are coach parks available?
No, there is no coach parking directly in front of Haus der Musik. Additionally, you’ll need an entry permit for coaches/buses that enter the Viennese 1st district. The next available coach stop is located at the Kursalon Hübner (Johannesgasse 33).

Can my child visit the museum on its own?
Children below 12 years must be accompanied by an adult.

Can I try musical instruments, eg. guitars or drums at Haus der Musik?
Unfortunately you can not play different instruments in the museum, but there is a piano in the entrance hall.


LIVE ON STAGE CONCERTS

Do I need a concert ticket if I have my HdM member card?
Yes, please get your free Live On Stage ticket with your member card at the box office. Be advised that there may not be any tickets left at the box office on the night of the concert

When does admission start?
Doors are usually half an hour before the start of the concert, around 7:30pm. A delay due to an extensive soundcheck is possible.

Where are the concerts taking place?
The Live On Stage concerts take place in the rooftop venue, accessible vie the glass elevator in the courtyard. The box office and cloak room are also located in the courtyard.

Are Live On Stage concerts always seated?
Generally, yes, but on very rare occasions there may be standing tickets

Is there a bar?
Yes, there is a bar in the adjacent room to the concert hall. We offer the basics: beer and wine. You can find sodas and other non-alcoholic drinks in the Self-Service-Café Nicolai (ground floor/inner courtyard).

Is the concert ticket also a ticket for the museum?
No, you will have to purchase a ticket for the museum if you would like to visit the exhibitions.

How and where can I buy my ticket?
Tickets are available at the museum’s box office & online via www.wien-ticket.at

Can I reserve concert tickets?
No, but you can buy them in advance on www.wien-ticket.at.

Do the concerts take place on a regular basis?
There are approximately 12 concerts per year, the exact tour dates depend on tour schedules and booking plans of the artists. 


CHILDREN’S CONCERTS

When does admission start?
Doors are generally 20-30 minutes before the concert.

How long do children’s concerts last?
Children’s concerts usually last about an hour.

Where do the children’s concerts take place?
The children’s concerts take place in the rooftop venue, accessible vie the glass elevator in the courtyard. The box office and cloak room are also located in the courtyard

Can I bring my kid’s stroller or my backpack?
No, backpacks and strollers are not permitted in the concert hall. You may deposit your belongings at the coat check; this service is free of charge.

Do I have to leave my jacket at the coat check?
For reasons of fire safety, we kindly ask you to deposit your jacket at the cloak room.

How and where can I buy my ticket?

No, but you can buy them in advance on www.wien-ticket.at.

My kid prefers to do something else today. Can I return my tickets?
No, concert tickets are non-refundable and cannot be exchanged.

The concert is sold out. Are there possibly any other tickets available?
No, there are no surplus tickets for the day of the concert.

From what age do children need their own concert ticket?
From their 2nd birthday onwards.

Do I require my own ticket as a chaperon?
Yes, every person who attends the concert and already had her/his 2nd birthday needs a ticket.

Can my child attend the concert on its own?
No, children under the age of 12 must be accompanied by an adult.
