The conductor's magical baton - 100 Years Herbert von Karajan

Karajan's baton, previously unpublished letters, photographs and other rarities in the Philharmonic Museum at Haus der Musik

Karajan's baton is just one of the treasured objects collected by the CEO of the Vienna Philharmonic, Clemens Hellsberg, and displayed in the expanded Philharmonic Museum at Haus der Musik. Other items include historical photographs with Eliette, of the Orchestra on world tour and with Indian Prime Minister Pandit Nehru - as well as manuscripts and letters.

A few examples: concert programmes from Herbert von Karajan's first appearance with the Vienna Philharmonic in 1934 and from his last appearance with the orchestra in 1989.

Director of HAUS DER MUSIK Simon K. Posch describes another highlight. "As part of our 'best of' New Year's Concert presentations on the big screen in the Philharmonic Museum, we are also paying homage to Karajan, conductor of the 1987 New Year's Concert".

With this exquisite little exhibition, HAUS DER MUSIK is turning the spotlight on Karajan for a very good reason: "Karajan influenced the sound of the Vienna Philharmonic like few others. This has earned him a place of honour in the museum that will extend well beyond the anniversary year", declares Clemens Hellsberg. "Naturally the archive also documents all our recordings and concerts with Karajan."

On the subject of batons, Haus der Musik also presents an entertaining interactive experience in the form of a virtual conductor. Now you too can conduct the Blue Danube or A Little Night Music. With a Philharmonic that follows your lead in perfect time.

The Karajan exhibition at Haus der Musik can be viewed daily from 10 am to 10 pm.
