A journey through the HOUSE OF MUSIC VIENNA
The HOUSE OF MUSIC VIENNA invites its visitors on a musical journey. On seven floors, music becomes audible and visible in real and virtual rooms. Infotainment, edutainment and entertainment – these three principles pervade the HOUSE OF MUSIC VIENNA. A link between adventure and experience has been created which is both impressive and enjoyable at the same time.
• The Ground Floor
A range of musical items can be obtained in different shops around the inner courtyard: instruments and high-quality hi-fi equipment. You may even watch Anna Hohenegger make a violine. You can also relax in the glass-covered café in the inner courtyard.
• The First Floor
The VIENNA PHILHARMONIC MUSEUM is located on the first floor in what were formerly the magnificent rooms of the Palais. Here, the orchestra with the unique sound presents its history and present. Here you do also find the two newest attractions of the HOUSE OF MUSIC VIENNA: the fascinating, interactive “Waltz-Dice-Game” and “Experience The New Year’s Concert”, the highlights of this world famous concert by the Vienna Philharmonics in perfect sound and vision.
• The Second Floor - Sonosphere
Let your ears take a stroll through the amazing world of tonal and sound phenomena.
In a “prenatal sensory rush”, visitors relive their first musical experience many years after their birth. In the Instrumentarium, they discover larger-than-life instruments in the Sea of Voices the voice as the most natural musical instrument. Finally, in the Polyphonium, you may experience perfect surround sound. The Sound Gallery collects different manner of sounds from the microcosm, the human body, the environment and the macrocosm.
• The Third Floor – The Great Masters of Viennese Music Tradition
Vienna’s worldwide reputation as a city of music has been primarily shaped by the musical genius of some renown composers. Joseph Haydn, Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart, Ludwig van Beethoven, Franz Schubert, Johann Strauss, Gustav Mahler, the Second Viennese School of Arnold Schönberg, Alban Berg and Anton Webern – their stories are told on the history floor. They are introduced in their contemporary environment through a display of documents, models, costumes, theatre tickets, scores, notes and personal items of the composers. Films and databases provide the focus of the setting and intensify the edutainment experience.
• The EXODUS, an artistic installation, reminds the visitors of all the musicians that were forced into exile or murdered in the twentieth century.
• The Virtual Conductor
Have a go at conducting the Vienna Philharmonic! Each visitor has a chance to do this with the Virtual Conductor. The musicians obey the conductor, follow his / her tempo and rhythm, and are also happy to reward him / her with applause. However, the orchestra’s patience is not without its limits. The Virtual Conductor is an interactive installation which has been specifically developed for the HOUSE OF MUSIC VIENNA.
• In Virtual Vienna, each visitor can pay a visit to the musical haunts throughout the city and you may even enter some of them.
• The Fourth Floor
Music between present and vision – Futuresphere
“Let your ears stand open-mouthed”
What could the future of music and music-making possibly be? The Brain Opera presents the latest developments by the MIT - the Massachusetts Institute of Technology - exclusive to the HOUSE OF MUSIC VIENNA. The Brain Opera was invented and composed by Tod Machover, Professor of composition at MIT, Media Lab, Boston, USA.
Visitors can create music themselves and shape the future in the present. The tones and moods, that they have created by interactively playing the amazing hyperinstruments of the Mind Forest through their movement, their touch and their voice, are stored and blend with other visitors’ ideas into worlds of sound, each uniquely original.
On the fourth floor, you are also invited to take a tour through the HOUSE OF MUSIC Shop which offers a huge variety of musical items.
