The man who brings harmony to the world
Maestro Zubin Mehta in discussion with Dr. Clemens Hellsberg on 20th June 2008
He's one of the most famous conductors in the world. An honorary member of the Vienna State Opera, of which he was Music Director from 1998 to 2006; an honorary member of the Society of Friends of Music in Vienna; holder of the Order of Maximilian and of the Lifetime Achievement Peace and Tolerance Award of the United Nations.
On top of all that, Zubin Mehta is the Honorary President and mentor of the Haus der Musik - not just on paper, but in practical action too. On 20th June 2008 he will be talking to Dr Clemens Hellsberg, Chairman of the Vienna Philharmonic, about music, politics, tolerance, aesthetics and the art of conducting.
Back in 1981 Mehta sent out a formidable signal of tolerance in a spectacular way when he conducted works by Richard Wagner in Israel. As far back as 1956, as a young conductor, he had given a concert for Hungarian refugees. Humanity is one of the fundamental aims of his philosophy of life.
